Kentucky Attorney-Turned-Novelist Anthony B. Gray Releases "What the Dark Feeds," a Haunting Triptych of Sin and Reckoning

In his sophomore book, Gray weaves three interconnected novellas set deep in the hollows of Kentucky, each one tracing how greed, pride, and wrath summon consequences that refuse to stay buried.
Lexington, Ky. — Anthony B. Gray, a practicing attorney with nearly two decades of experience in corporate and healthcare law, has released his second book, What the Dark Feeds: Three Sins, Three Reckonings, a collection of three connected novellas exploring the seven deadly sins through the lens of Kentucky folklore and Southern gothic horror. Published by Paper Wrights, LLC, the book follows Gray's 2025 debut thriller, Torrent, and marks his return to the darker, more supernatural storytelling that first captivated him as a child.
The collection is built around three standalone stories — "The Vessel: A Story of Greed," "The Favorite Son: A Story of Pride," and "The Witness Tree: A Story of Wrath" — each set in a different corner of Kentucky's hills and hollows, and each centered on an ordinary person convinced they are beyond consequence. A woman chasing an inheritance she believes she is owed travels to a hollow where old customs still hold power. A man who has built his life on charm and buried secrets discovers that some things will not stay hidden. A family whose fortune was rooted in a violent past learns that the land itself keeps records the living would rather forget. Though the characters never cross paths, the stories are bound together by shared geography, shared themes, and a recurring warning: the darkness is patient, and it remembers what people have tried to bury.
Gray set out to write stories that use fear as a lens for examining human failing rather than as an end in themselves. Drawing on his lifelong roots in Kentucky and a faith-shaped understanding of sin and consequence, he wanted readers to recognize themselves in characters who are not monsters, but ordinary people making the small compromises that eventually catch up with them. Written with the pacing of a thriller and the atmosphere of Southern gothic horror, What the Dark Feeds is aimed at readers who enjoy morally complex characters, slow-building dread, and stories where a place is as much a character as the people who live there.

Anthony B. Gray is a Lexington, Kentucky-based attorney with nineteen years of experience in corporate and healthcare law. By day he navigates the complexities of corporate practice; by night he writes fiction exploring the darker corners of the human heart. A father of two young boys, Gray balances his legal career and writing with a dedicated yoga and fitness practice, which he credits as a source of creative discipline. A lifelong Kentuckian, he draws on the state's rolling hills, hidden hollows, and complicated history to create stories in which the land itself becomes a character. What the Dark Feeds is his second book, following his debut thriller, Torrent. He lives in Lexington with his family.
