The Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hosted an assembly of representatives from nine countries which encompassed the teachings of twelve different schools of traditional and complementary medicine?Ayurvedic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, chiropractic, yoga, and traditional medical practices from other nations like Thailand, Korea, and Africa. As the first event of its kind, this forum focused on uniting alternative and complementary medical practices from around the world while introducing and discussing policy-related matters that affect these methods of healthcare worldwide.

Most importantly, the Shanghai Forum for World Traditional Medicine strived to encourage and create a platform on which nations throughout the world could cooperate to improve alternative medicine practices practiced across the planet.

The Shanghai University of TCM partnered with the Shanghai Shuguang TCM Research and Development Foundation and the State Administration of TCM of the Peoples Republic of China to make this forum a reality. The Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) was excited to attend this innovative meeting, and SCU's faculty welcomed the opportunity for education and cooperation amongst alternative medicine partners worldwide.

Since, according to the Shanghai Shuguang TCM Research and Development Foundation, the primary goal of TCM is to globally expand and integrate seamlessly with modern medical practices, an effort to standardize the ancient practices of TCM through the International Organization for Standardization (IOS) was present at the Shanghai forum.

Due to regulatory differences between traditional medical practices, the worldwide collaborative development of TCM has thus far been elusive. For example, cultural differences as well as differences in training, licensing, beliefs, and experiences have made it more difficult to unify the nine countries present at the forum and their cohesive, alternative medicine practices.

To improve the efforts to internationally unify traditional medical practices, a Technical Committee formed partially by attendees of the Shanghai University of TCM is tackling the challenge of standardization within the various fields of TCM. For example, this Technical Committee strives to develop a set of commonly accepted standards for traditional medicine practice which also incorporate aspects of modern medical methods. This committee does not intend to focus on the clinical practice of medicine, but rather the regulation of the quality and safety of services provided in the practice of TCM.

Presentations during the Shanghai forum included expert information on each of the twelve forms of traditional medicine presented in addition to discussions about the present and future of traditional medicine as it is practiced in different cultures. Additionally, demonstrations were even performed to encourage education, understanding, and awareness of various types of TCM and their astounding effects.

While this was the first event of its kind, it will certainly not be the last, and SCU looks forward to continued participation.
