Bradley Dworkin Expresses Concern that Happy Hour Law Could Cause Accidents

The Illinois legislature has made a big change to longstanding state law this year and that's caused concern among those who fight for driver safety in the state. On July 15, Governor Bruce Rauner signed a new alcohol enforcement law. As part of that law, happy hour will become legal in Illinois for the first time since 1989.

Chicago personal injury attorney Bradley Dworkin has reservations about the law and how it might impact driver safety. "We need less incentive for people to drink and drive, not more," the driver explained. "I can't understand the benefit of offering people more alcohol at less cost during a time in which many people are driving home from work."

The law does maintain some restrictions. Happy hours are limited to up to four hours per day and 15 hours per week. Also, they must be advertised at least one week in advance and must end before 10 pm. There also can't be any volume discounts or offerings of "all you can drink" promotions.

Supporters of the law say it will help boost tourism, but Mr. Dworkin doesn't buy that idea. "Chicago is a world-class city," he exclaimed. "As are some of our other tourist spots in the state. I don't think we need happy hour to get tourists to Illinois."

"I have nothing against anyone who wants to participate in happy hour," he continued. "I just hope they do so safely and responsibly."

Mr. Dworkin, who is a personal injury attorney in Chicago, added that history has shown that there will be more than a few happy hour drinkers who don't enjoy themselves in a safe manner. "The statistics are what they are," he stated. "We have too many people who simply can't keep themselves from drinking and driving and hurting other people on the road. I can't see how happy hour is going to do anything except make that problem worse."
