A delegation of principals from leading public schools in Delhi and education experts, led by Dr. Alka Kapur, Principal, Modern Public School (MPS), Shalimar Bagh, met Hon’ble Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Verma Ji at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai to discuss the evolving role of education and educators in preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

The discussion was centred entirely on how schools must adapt to an era defined by artificial intelligence, climate change and rapid social transformation. The educators emphasised that modern schooling has to look beyond high grades and standardised assessments to empower students with practical skills, emotional resilience and a strong sense of social responsibility. True education must focus on the whole student, helping them build practical capabilities alongside a genuine commitment to their community.

His excellency stressed on the importance of integrating the Indian Knowledge System into contemporary education and creating meaningful value addition during students’ formative years. The discussion highlighted the need for schools to equip the young learners with both “wings and roots” along with the ability to navigate an increasingly interconnected world while remaining grounded in their values, culture and responsibilities as citizens.

Reflecting on the delegation’s experience, Principal Dr. Alka Kapur, Modern Public School, Shalimar Bagh, said, “Being invited to Lok Bhavan and having the opportunity to interact with the Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra was an honour and a truly memorable experience. The interaction was an eye-opener in many ways, giving us an opportunity to reflect deeply on the evolving purpose of education and the responsibility we carry as educators. The Hon’ble Governor’s insights on values, the Indian Knowledge System and the need to nurture not just informed but responsible and compassionate individuals offered valuable perspectives for all of us. I am deeply grateful to the Hon’ble Governor for his time, warmth and thoughtful interaction, which made this experience particularly meaningful and one that I will remember for a long time.”

The interaction reaffirmed the belief in core principle of the institution that schooling must look beyond grades, test papers, and textbooks. As the saying goes,’ The future belongs to those who prepare for it today’, teachers must continually change their approach and keep pace with the times.

The meeting served as a reminder that education is not about choosing between technology and tradition, but about bringing the best of both worlds together to help students embrace innovation, think critically and handle a tech-heavy world without losing sight of personal values and cultural roots.
