Understanding how IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is identified is an important step toward appropriate kidney care. NephCure has expanded its educational resources to help patients, caregivers, and families better understand IgAN diagnosis, symptoms, testing, and available treatment approaches.

IgA nephropathy is a kidney disease in which Immunoglobulin A (IgA) builds up in the kidneys and can cause inflammation and damage to the kidney's filtering units. Common signs may include blood or protein in the urine, although some people may have few noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

Understanding IgAN Diagnosis

Blood and urine tests can provide important clues. Urine testing may detect blood or protein, while blood tests can show changes associated with reduced kidney filtration. However, a kidney biopsy is currently the definitive test used to diagnose IgA nephropathy, allowing doctors to examine kidney tissue under a microscope.

Early evaluation can be particularly important because IgAN affects people differently. In some patients, the disease can gradually reduce kidney function and may eventually lead to kidney failure.

Supporting Better Awareness

NephCure provides information designed to help people understand IgAN and navigate conversations with their healthcare providers. Its resources cover diagnosis, treatment options, clinical trials, nutrition, and living with IgAN.

The organization also launched the IgAN Alliance in 2025, bringing together advocacy organizations, healthcare professionals, industry partners, patients, and caregivers with the goal of raising awareness, speeding diagnosis, and improving care pathways.
