Mumbai, August 8, 2026: The Governments of Meghalaya and Maharashtra today marked a significant milestone in interstate collaboration with the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new Meghalaya House at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, following the formal handing over of land by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Government of Maharashtra.

The new Meghalaya House marks a major expansion of Meghalaya's institutional presence in Mumbai and reinforces the State Government’s commitment to providing better facilities and services for citizens travelling to the city for medical treatment, higher education, official assignments, business and tourism. The foundation stone was jointly laid by Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, underscoring the enduring partnership between the two States and their shared commitment to cooperative federalism.

Dignitaries in attendance included Shri Prestone Tynsong, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya; Shri Sosthen K. Sohtun, Hon’ble Minister, General Administration Department, Government of Meghalaya; Shri Milind Deora, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha; Shri Nitin Patil, Hon’ble Mayor, Panvel Municipal Corporation; Members of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly, including Shri Aniket Tatkare, Shri Vikrant Patil, Shri Prashant Thakur, Shri Mahendra Thorve, Shri Mahesh Baldi and Smt. Manda Mhatre; Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya; Shri Cyril V. D. Diengdoh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, General Administration Department, Government of Meghalaya; senior officials of the Governments of Meghalaya and Maharashtra; representatives of CIDCO; and other distinguished guests.

The new Meghalaya House is being developed in response to the growing demand for accommodation from citizens visiting Mumbai. Since its establishment in 2008, the existing Meghalaya House at Vashi, with a capacity of just 12 rooms, has been operating under increasing pressure, particularly with the growing number of patients and attendants travelling to Tata Memorial Hospital. The facility also serves students, officials, entrepreneurs, sportspersons and tourists from Meghalaya visiting Mumbai. The new campus at Kharghar will substantially enhance accommodation capacity and public facilities, ensuring that more citizens have access to safe, comfortable and affordable lodging while away from home.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, thanked Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the State Cabinet, officials, CIDCO and the local MLA for their support in making the project possible. He described the establishment of Meghalaya House at a prime location like this as a significant moment for the State, particularly given the constraints of land and space in the city. “For us as a State of Meghalaya, today almost feels like a dream,” he said, expressing his gratitude to Chief Minister, Shri Devendra Fadnavis and the Government of Maharashtra for helping turn this aspiration into reality.

Shri Sangma also highlighted the strong presence of people from Meghalaya in Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai, across healthcare, education, business, music, sports and entrepreneurship. He expressed confidence that the new Meghalaya House would further strengthen the relationship between Meghalaya and Maharashtra and deepen the connection between the two States. He added, “At the end of the day, this is not something that we are doing for us, this is for the people of Meghalaya.”

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, welcomed the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the Deputy Chief minister and the delegation to Mumbai, and highlighted the deep cultural and people-to-people connect between Maharashtra and Meghalaya. He noted that Mumbai and Pune have long been important destinations for people from the Northeast, particularly students, artists and professionals, and said that their presence reflects the spirit of India’s unity and diversity. “This is not merely Maharashtra’s or Mumbai’s land; this is the future of the country,” he said, underscoring the growing importance of the region, where the Meghalaya House, spanning a total land area of 2071.67 sq. metres, will be constructed.

Describing Meghalaya as one of the most beautiful States in the Northeast, Shri Fadnavis also spoke of Meghalaya’s strong association with music, particularly rock music, and noted the shared connection between Mumbai, the country’s major music hub, and Meghalaya. He acknowledged the contribution of people from Meghalaya working in education, healthcare, music and other professions in Maharashtra and said that these connections had created a deep and enduring relationship between the two States. Shri Fadnavis also acknowledged Meghalaya’s growing economy under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Conrad K Sangma and expressed his enthusiasm for establishing future cultural and economic relationships with the state.

Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, described the project as the outcome of sustained collaboration between the Governments of Meghalaya and Maharashtra. He acknowledged the support, cooperation and goodwill extended by the Government of Maharashtra and its entire machinery, including CIDCO and various departments, in taking this initiative forward.

Shri Cyril V.D. Diengdoh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, General Administration Department, Government of Meghalaya, highlighted the significance of the Kharghar location, noting that the area is emerging as a major hub for innovation, new technology and data centres and could become an important growth engine for Maharashtra and the country. He said the new Meghalaya Bhavan would complement this emerging ecosystem while serving as a dedicated space of hospitality and support for people from Meghalaya visiting Mumbai for healthcare, education, business, official work and tourism.

The ceremony also celebrated Meghalaya's rich cultural heritage through a special performance by Khmih Creative Society under the Chief Minister's Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme (CM MGMP), showcasing the State's vibrant artistic traditions before an audience comprising dignitaries from both States.

The establishment of the new Meghalaya House represents another important step in the Government of Meghalaya’s vision of building modern, accessible and citizen-centric public infrastructure while strengthening partnerships with other States to deliver better public services. As Meghalaya continues to deepen its engagement with the rest of the country, the new facility will serve as a welcoming gateway for its people and a lasting symbol of the friendship and cooperation between Meghalaya and Maharashtra.
