Centre releases a total of INR 6,154.96 crore fund to States in F.Y 2026-27 to further boost Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

In a major boost to maintain implementation momentum of the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Government of India has reimbursed ₹5,289.09 crore as Central share to 10 States and has released ₹865.87 crore through SNA SPARSH across 13 States during this Financial Year 2026-27.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Hon'ble Prime Minister, approved Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 on 10th March 2026, extending the Mission till December 2028 with an enhanced focus on ensuring reliable, adequate and safe drinking water services for every rural household. The Mission has been approved with a total outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore, including Central assistance of ₹3.59 lakh crore, to support States and UTs in achieving universal and sustainable drinking water coverage.



To ensure that progress under the Mission remained uninterrupted, during the transition period, from the completion of the earlier JJM 1.0 Mission to the approval of JJM 2.0, several States continued implementation of approved rural water supply schemes using their own financial resources. Recognizing these efforts and to maintain implementation momentum, the Government of India has reimbursed ₹5,289.09 crore as Central share to 10 States in the FY 2026-27.

It may be noted that, JJM 2.0 marks a shift from infrastructure creation to assured service delivery through strengthened GP-led operation and maintenance (O&M) of water supply systems, source sustainability, water quality surveillance, community ownership and digital governance. A major reform introduced under JJM 2.0 is the Scheme-based Payment and Release through SNA SPARSH platform that enables scheme-level fund release, expenditure tracking and real-time monitoring of financial progress. SNA SPARSH facilitates payments linked to individual water supply schemes, thereby improving accountability, transparency, auditability and efficiency in utilisation of public funds.

Additionally, as on date, during this F.Y 2026-27 a total of ₹865.87 crore has been released through SNA SPARSH across 13 States.

The Government of India is accelerating the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0, with a renewed focus on sustainable service delivery, digital governance, community ownership and long-term water security for rural households across the country. Under JJM 2.0, several transformative reforms are being introduced, including:

Jal Arpan, the formal handover of completed schemes to Gram Panchayats and Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs);
Creation of unique Sujalam Bharat IDs for drinking water assets;
Geo-tagging and digital mapping of rural water supply infrastructure on the PM Gati Shakti platform;
Community-led assessment through Jal Seva Aankalan;
Strengthened focus on long-term sustainability and service delivery.
Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri C.R. Patil, is holding interaction meetings with Hon'ble Members of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) from states as part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to strengthen field-level implementation and facilitate resolution of constituency-specific issues. So far, the minister has already held interaction meetings with Members of Parliaments of four states, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Odisha and West Bengal on 27 July, 29 July, 30 July and 5 August 2026, respectively. Further the next round of interactions is scheduled with Members of Parliament from Haryana (6 August 2026), Uttar Pradesh (10 August 2026), Madhya Pradesh (11 August 2026) and Maharashtra (12 August 2026).

These interactions aim to review the progress of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, deliberate on region-specific issues pertaining to rural drinking water supply and obtain valuable feedback from Hon'ble Members of Parliament for further strengthening the planning, implementation, monitoring and long-term sustainability of the Mission.

The Government of India remains committed to working in partnership with States and UTs. The focus of JJM 2.0 is not only to provide tap water connections, but to ensure that every rural household continues to receive safe, adequate and reliable drinking water services for generations to come.
