June 2026: Some places do more than grow. They preserve, nurture, and remind us to slow down. This World Environment Day, Luxmi Tea celebrates the enduring spirit of Makaibari Tea Estate, where for over 165 years, life has moved in rhythm with nature. Tucked into the green hills of Darjeeling, Makaibari has quietly followed a simple belief that when we care for the earth with patience and respect, it gives back in abundance. More than a tea estate, it is a living reflection of how people and nature can thrive together.

Long before sustainability became a global conversation, Makaibari chose a different path through biodynamic farming, treating the land as a living ecosystem. By enriching the soil naturally, protecting biodiversity, and working with seasonal cycles, the estate continues to nurture an environment that is healthy, resilient, and enduring. This commitment extends beyond the gardens through Fairtrade and ethical practices that support local communities through education, healthcare, and women's empowerment. Every harvest, including Makaibari's Silver Green Tea, carries forward a way of life rooted in care, balance, and conscious living.

Rudra Chatterjee, Managing Director, Luxmi Tea Co Private Ltd, said, "At Makaibari, sustainability has never been a trend. It is a way of being. We believe the most meaningful change begins with small, mindful choices that respect nature, strengthen communities, and leave the world gentler than we found it."

As conversations around sustainability continue to grow, Luxmi Tea remains rooted in the belief that progress should feel restorative, not extractive. Through Makaibari's legacy, the estate invites people to reconnect with nature, embrace slower rituals, and remember that caring for the planet begins with how we live each day.

Founded in 1859, Makaibari is among the oldest tea estates in Darjeeling and the world's first certified biodynamic tea garden. Situated at altitudes between 2,000 and 7,000 feet in the Kurseong subdivision of West Bengal, the 1,600-acre estate encompasses only 160 acres of tea cultivation; the remainder is reserved forest, wildlife corridor, and watershed. This restraint is not incidental; it is the philosophy made physical.

Makaibari became a benchmark for what biodynamic agriculture could produce in a tea context: a garden farmed in alignment with the lunar calendar, composted with on- estate materials, and integrated with the forest ecosystem that surrounds it. The result is a soil of rare vitality and a cup that reflects it without apology.

Makaibari teas have been served at the Savoy in London, stocked by Fortnum & Mason, and sought by connoisseurs from Tokyo to New York. The First Flush, in particular, commands attention each year from traders and enthusiasts who understand that no two harvests are identical, and that the earliest plucking of the year, from rested winter bushes, carries a freshness no later harvest can replicate.
