Founded in 1859, Makaibari is among the oldest tea estates in Darjeeling and the world's first certified biodynamic tea garden. Situated at altitudes between 2,000 and 7,000 feet in the Kurseong subdivision of West Bengal, the 1,600-acre estate encompasses only 160 acres of tea cultivation; the remainder is reserved forest, wildlife corridor, and watershed. This restraint is not incidental; it is the philosophy made physical.

Makaibari became a benchmark for what biodynamic agriculture could produce in a tea context: a garden farmed in alignment with the lunar calendar, composted with on- estate materials, and integrated with the forest ecosystem that surrounds it. Makaibari teas have been served at the Savoy in London, stocked by Fortnum & Mason, and sought by connoisseurs from Tokyo to New York.
