Fiber broadband upstream consumption crossed the 100 GB milestone for the first time, while the gap between fiber and DOCSIS users expanded significantly during the first quarter of 2026, based on early data shared by OpenVault.
During the Fiber For Breakfast podcast, OpenVault CEO and Co-founder Mark Trudeau revealed fresh insights into fiber versus DOCSIS performance trends. Joined by host Gary Bolton, President and CEO of the Fiber Broadband Association, and Jeff Heynen, Vice President at the Dell’Oro Group, Trudeau explained how the higher capacity and symmetrical speeds of fiber networks are accelerating overall usage—particularly in upstream traffic.
Data gathered from broadband systems using both fiber and DOCSIS architectures in Q1 2026 revealed several key findings:
• Average upstream usage on fiber networks reached 106.7 GB, marking the first time it has exceeded 100 GB.
• Fiber users consumed 87.4% more upstream data compared to DOCSIS users, who averaged 56.9 GB.
• Provisioned upstream speeds on fiber averaged 556 Mbps—an impressive 1187.4?ster than the 43 Mbps recorded on DOCSIS networks.
• Total average data usage among fiber subscribers hit 943.4 GB, 30.9% higher than the 720.5 GB seen on DOCSIS. Median usage also showed a strong lead, with fiber at 721.0 GB versus DOCSIS at 496.0 GB, a difference of 45.4%.
OpenVault initially highlighted this growing disparity in its Q4 2025 OpenVault Broadband Insights (OVBI) report. At that time, average upstream usage on fiber networks stood at 93.0 GB—already 66% higher than the 56.0 GB recorded on DOCSIS systems within the same networks.
The company plans to release more in-depth findings in its Q1 2026 OVBI report, scheduled for May. This release will coincide with OpenVault’s participation in Fiber Connect 2026 (May 17–20 in Nashville) and ANGACOM 2026 (May 19–21 in Cologne). Interested participants can schedule meetings via email or register on the company’s website to receive the upcoming report.
