Kanthal, recognized as a pioneer in electric industrial heating technology worldwide, and Danieli Group, a prominent Italian supplier of turnkey plants and equipment for the iron and steel industry, have entered a strategic partnership. This collaboration marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable practices in steel production. The focus of this partnership is to scale up Kanthal’s highly acclaimed electric process gas direct-heating solution, known as Prothal® DH, to full industrial scale.

Kanthal and Danieli Group partner to achieve fully green DRI production

By integrating Prothal® DH into Energiron hydrogen-ready DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) plants, the industry can achieve fully green DRI production. Additionally, incorporating Prothal® DH technology into blast furnace operations will significantly reduce CO2 emissions in ironmaking. The iron and steel industry, responsible for 7% of global CO2 emissions, is under increasing pressure to decarbonize. For this reason, several European projects are exploring hydrogen-based direct reduced iron processes (H2-DRI) to eliminate CO2 emissions and produce green steel. Kanthal’s Prothal® DH is a direct heated electric solution designed for high-temperature process gas heating, representing a crucial step towards zero-emission DRI plants. This technology has been successfully tested on a pilot scale, and the partnership with Danieli Group aims to develop it to a full industrial scale, reaching up to hundreds of megawatts. The goal is to commercialize the solution by 2027. “We are now taking another step towards commercializing large-scale, electric gas heaters, which will be key to substantially reducing or even eliminating CO2 emissions”, stated Simon Lile, President of Business Unit Heating Systems at Kanthal. He expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Danieli Group, a leading expert in DRI technology, to facilitate the steel industry’s transition to green production.

Danieli Group: Prothal® DH’s versatile solution for green DRI plants

The Prothal® DH heating solution will be adaptable for use with hydrogen, natural gas, or combinations of both, enabling retrofitting of existing DRI plants. “Even for natural gas-based DRI plants, you will achieve more than 30% reduction of CO2 emissions when you electrify the heating system”, explained Marco Lapasin, Vice President of Danieli Engineering Centro Metallics. He emphasized the partnership’s potential to significantly advance Energiron DR plant’s carbon footprint reduction in the pursuit of green steel: “This partnership allows the unlocking of huge potential for a new technology that will drive Energiron DR plant’s carbon footprint furtherly ahead in the race of green steel”. Energiron, a DRI technology co-developed by Tenova and Danieli Group, was highlighted during the Future Steel Forum event in Stockholm, Sweden. Dilip Chandrasekaran, Global Business Development Manager at Kanthal, who led the development of the direct electric heater, remarked, “After years of research, designing, and testing, the solution is now ready to be verified on an industrial scale. We build this on already proven technology but on a scale that has never been done before. If successful, this has the potential to revolutionize the steel industry”. The strategic partnership between Kanthal and Danieli Group represents a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable and environmentally friendly steel production, promising a future with reduced carbon emissions and green steel.
