Recently, Intel announced that they will rebrand their processors for the first time in fifteen years. Intel has changed how it names its processors after 15 years. This is because of new advancements and the upcoming 14th Gen Intel Core processors, named "Meteor Lake." Unlike the 4th Gen Core or 9th Gen Core, they won't use generational numbers anymore.
To align with this new approach, Intel will categorize its consumer products into two levels, distinguishing between mainstream and flagship offerings. This strategic move will likely simplify its product lineup and establish a more distinct structure. Regarding naming, Intel is removing the "i" from its client processors. For example, the Intel Core i3 will change to Intel Core 3, the i5 will become Intel Core 5, and the i7 will be called Intel Core 7. This new naming will start with the release of the Meteor Lake Core CPUs in late 2023.
Notably, Intel is introducing a new tier known as "Core Ultra." This addition addresses the challenge of simultaneously marketing two different processor architectures. Intel will need to promote processors based on the "Raptor Lake," and the upcoming "Meteor Lake" architectures, and the Core Ultra branding will aid in distinguishing between the two. This transition allows for a more graceful shift between architecture generations and aids in managing inventory transitions. Within the main Core branding, there will be three tiers: Core 3, Core 5, and Core 7. The Core Ultra brand will include Core Ultra 5, Core Ultra 7, and Core Ultra 9, catering to enthusiast-grade SKUs within a generation.
Caitlin Anderson, Intel vice president and general manager of Client Computing Group Sales, stated, "Our client roadmap demonstrates how Intel prioritizes innovation and technology leadership with products like Meteor Lake, focused on power efficiency and AI at scale. To better align with our product strategies, we are introducing a branding structure that will help PC buyers better differentiate the best of our latest technology and our mainstream offerings,"
Furthermore, Intel has claimed that the Meteor Lake Core CPUs, built on its novel architecture, are completely founded on a chipset design. These processors are structured around three distinct tiles: IO Tile, SOC Tile, and Compute Tile. Each of these tiles serves different functions, such as the Compute Tile encompassing the CPU and GFX tiles. Similarly, the CPU tile is anticipated to feature a fresh hybrid core configuration that balances high-performance capabilities with lower power consumption. In parallel, the graphics tile is poised to introduce unprecedented features.
Also, Intel's claims encompass Meteor Lake CPUs being equipped with tiled Arc graphics that will drive the GPU, bringing forth a brand-new category of integrated graphics. The Meteor Lake Processors incorporate the Battlemage DG3 graphics architecture, offering improved performance along with extensive support for DirectX 12 Ultimate and XeSS features.
Reportedly, These processors are rumored to be the first to use Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) and are expected to balance performance and efficiency in their cores. The architecture, known as Redwood Cove, is fully chipset-based. There are speculations of compatibility with the LGA 1700 platform, DDR5 memory support, and integration of 800-series chips and PCIe Gen 5. Around 192 graphics execution units are expected, although the core count hasn't been confirmed. These processors are projected to consume between 5 and 125 watts, making them suitable for low-power laptops and desktop systems.
