The UAEU College of Food and Agriculture research team in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture & Food Safety Authority ADAFSA and in partnership with the Scotland's Rural College -Epidemiology Research Unit, has completed the first phase of epidemiological research webinars. It aims to prepare a model to reduce the spread of animal diseases to adopt models, statistics, and simulation systems of epidemics and to employ these indicators to support biosecurity-related decision-making.
The researcher, Dr. Ehab Fateh Al-Rahman - Professor at the UAEU- College of Food and Agriculture said: "The program was launched in the month of July after 12 webinars and case studies which lasted for four months." This research enhances the policies of biological security and raises the level of readiness to combat diseases in the short term and eliminate diseases that threaten livestock in the long term. He added that "This system simulates a number of strategies such as quarantine, vaccination and sterilization procedures to reduce the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), bird flu, MERS virus, and Congo hemorrhagic fever. As a result of this collaborative project, the first integrated smart algorithm has been launched and adopted that can be applied to find out the possible scenarios for the spread of epidemics, risks and impact on livestock in Abu Dhabi.
