The Trump administration has put forward a proposal to increase the number of merit based immigrants it accepts into the country by 57 percent. The government has also proposed that half of the immigration would be on the basis of humanitarian and family
Jared Kushner, who is the son in law as well as Senior presidential adviser to Donald Trump, has opined that having an immigration policy based on merit, would be instrumental in attracting talented and highly skilled people from all over the world to USA. This would help USA to generate more than 500 billion USD over the next 10 year, through taxes.
Mr Kushner stated that this would also bring in many more people into the social safety nets and would increase the net total contribution to social security. This would help support American citizens who are on social welfare. Mr Jared Kushner has been leading the immigration reform project in the present government under the direction of President Donald Trump. The reform project is expected to be finalized in the near future and would then be made public.
Many politicians as well as industry leaders have often expressed their concern that the US immigration system is outdated and needs an overhaul. At present only 12 per cent of the people get to immigrate to USA through merit based immigration. In comparison, Canada has 53 percent of its immigrants coming in on the basis of merit. While New Zealand and Australia have 59 and 63 percent respectively.
If US merit based immigration is increased to 57 percent, then it will be on par with the other countries, which USA will become economically competitive. 1.1 million People took the oath of citizenship in the previous year and this year too the number is expected to be the same. However the composition or demographic of the group will see a skew in favor of highly skilled immigrants if the merit based immigration plan goes through.
Presidential adviser, Jared Kushner revealed that his team has come up with the new proposal after conducting a thorough study of the existing immigration system in the United States and drawing lessons from the best immigration policies of a number of different nations.
