Carrying out a workplace investigation can in itself be quite a pain. On top of it, many organizations compound its unpleasantness by assigning this work to inexperienced or already overburdened personnel, who many times treat this is casually, as just another extra assignment handed to them.
The real issue with workplace investigations is that many times, one has to investigate a colleague with whom one has worked for many years closely, or one who is a close friend. The investigating employee is placed in a delicate situation, and the investigated colleague feels a sense of infuriation and betrayal. To help overcome these limitations, which could not only damage the relations between employees, but also dent the organization’s image; the organization, if it finds itself in a situation where this kind of investigation unavoidable, should make the investigation structured, transparent and visible.
Helping to understand the feelings that go into an investigation
The aim of this webinar is to help organizations understand the sensitivities involved in situations such as the one narrated above. Teri will show how to make the investigation complete by accumulating as much information as one can, so that there is no scope for a feeling of being wronged, prejudiced, or retaliated against.
She will also show how to prevent all the unnecessary gossip and other negatives seeping into the rumor mill. When objectivity is missing in the investigation, it leads to a terrible loss of reputation, in addition to inviting retaliatory legal recourses that the investigated employee has access to, which gives her enough ammunition to file a case of wrongdoing.
Another important element of this learning that Teri will impart is in how to interpret the body language during an investigation. This is largely subjective and speculative, but is important nevertheless, especially when full information is not forthcoming about the investigation. Teri will show how to understand and interpret this vital aspect of a workplace investigation.
At this webinar, Teri will cover the following areas:
o When are employees entitled to representation during an investigation?
o How to prepare and what to do before an interview
o Organizing your interview so you can ask good questions
o Strategies for the reluctant witness
o The angry "hothead". Dangerous or something else?
o What about tape-recording: Is it a good idea?
o Body language: Can you tell if a witness is giving false or skewed testimony? Developing behavioral baselines
o Considering cultural diversity
o The note taker and their role
o Taking notes and pacing the interview
o Starting and ending your interview
o Educating all parties about retaliation
o What about witnesses that are not your employee? Tips for customer complaints and joint employment interviews.
