Dr. Robert Faber of [Mission Laser Dentistry] is pleased to offer his patients the comfort and ease of Laser dentistry. Many procedures which formerly required needle anesthesia, drilling, scalpel-cutting and longer recovery time are now rendered with a dental laser in Dr. Fabers San Juan Capistrano practice. Some common procedures that Dr. Faber performs are-cavity removal and bonded white (composite) fillings, frenulectomy, gingivectomy, periodontal (gum) disease treatment, apthous ulcer (canker sore) therapy and oral surgery. Certain procedures cannot be accomplished by laser-such as those that require the removal of metal fillings or crowns.
There are a myriad of benefits to laser treatment according to Dr. Faber. With the Waterlase we are able to perform the necessary procedure using topical anesthetic only-that is no shot is given to the patient, and the patient generally has a much more mild post-operative experience. Combine this with faster healing time after oral surgery for laser patients and I really think this is hands down a winner for our dental patients!
After practicing dentistry for 23 years and being trained in and utilizing the traditional methods/treatment modalities for many years, Dr. Faber is well-qualified to weigh in on the benefits of laser dentistry. For the children in my practice, not getting a shot is a significant improvement. For the adults, the many procedures that took weeks to heal now take only 30-40% of that time and are accompanied by very little discomfort throughout the shortened healing period. And of course adults like not having a shot as well, its just that many adult procedures involve removing old metal crowns and fillings and unfortunately we still dont have a laser that can cut metal.
The Waterlase is revolutionary for one particular procedure that is necessary when a young patient has a space between his/her front teeth called a diastema, This gap is most often the result of an improperly formed muscle attachment under the upper lip known as a high frenum, and the requisite procedures to correct the condition starts with a surgery known as frenulectomy. Prior to Waterlase, a 10 year-old would be diagnosed with a high frenum and be sent to the oral surgeon for its removal prior to having Orthodontic treatment. The surgeon would then give needle anesthesia via a shot, then cut the tissue with a scalpel,,,finished by tieing 10-15 stitches on the inside surface of the kids upper lip. This would then hurt the patient post operatively pretty bad for a week while it healed. Faber adds, now with the Waterlase, we do the procedure here in my familiar office. Only bubble gum-flavored jelly anesthetic is used. I make about 15-20 passes with the laser through the tissue and the patient goes home with nothing more than an ice-pack needed for the very small amount of discomfort that the patient experiences> In fact, Dr. Faber says that his most recent frenulectomy patient was playing on the playground with her friends the very next day after surgery.
Laser teeth whitening/bleaching is also something that Dr. Faber offers his patients at his [San Juan Capistrano dental practice](https://www.google.com/search?q=San+Juan+Capistrano+Dentist&npsic=0&rflfq=1&rlha=0&rllag=33495622,-117665055,308&tbm=lcl&ved=0ahUKEwigqcHDjoLcAhUM-6wKHeHXAJkQjGoIaw&tbs=lrf:!2m4!1e17!4m2!17m1!1e2!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:2&rldoc=1#rlfi=hd:;si:11862738397507155561;mv:!1m3!1d761227.777699607!2d-118.4170333!3d34.19439694999999!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i312!2i346!4f13.1), though curiously the old school trays and gel technique produces equal or better results and the cost is roughly 50% that of laser whitening.
