Acupuncture has been used by the Chinese since at least the 3rd century BC, but has only recently become accepted in the Western world. Very often the cause of these pains is tension in a muscle and the presence of trigger points. If the tension in the muscles is released the tensions around a joint can be rebalanced and proper alignment can be restored.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the body at very specific points in what are called the acupuncture channels. The objective is to rebalance the flow of energy in the body which the Chinese refer to as qi (pronounced chee) which when achieved clears up the problem. The Chinese traditionally see physical problems in the body as an imbalance of energy so when the balance is restored the problem is solved.

Nobody really knows exactly how acupuncture works, although a considerable amount of research has been carried out. There are theories that inserting a needle, or needling, can affect some types of nerve fibres and as a result it can stimulate or shut down certain areas of the limbic system. This helps with the restoration of homeostasis, which is the state of balance that our bodies endeavour to maintain. What is certain is that needling specific points has the desired effect, as opposed to needling other areas in control conditions which produce no change.
