The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the introduction of ample toll payment options for enhancing the appreciation value of commuter convenience even further. This move is the latest throw of the dice by the autonomous agency of the Government of India for revamping the National Highways (NHs) landscape. The highways structure has already been boosted by many recent projects from the NHAI such as Wayside Amenities (WSAs), and Incident Management System (IMS) that have received massive plaudits by the commuters, and technology experts alike.
This move stretches the flexibility factor for the highway travellers who can now pay their due toll amounts through their mobile phones that are linked to prepaid wallets, bank accounts and credit cards. As a result, the toll amount is deducted automatically from their bank accounts ensuring a smooth ride throughout the journey. The National Highways Authority of India has strategically chosen five stretches, including Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Kolkata and Bengaluru-Chennai for testing five innovations, according to a NHAI spokesperson. The foreseeable future will also see the unveiling of a mobile application which will include multiple options for payment of toll taxes.
This mobile app will have to be first downloaded by the commuters followed by the registration of vehicle details with verification from Vahan, the national vehicle database, for authentication of the owner and validity of registration. The app will be inclusive of a prepaid wallet which would ensure payment on all toll plazas till the destination, beforehand itself. It would also require the driver of the vehicle to scan the QR code generated by the system at the toll plaza. Another option on this application will be unified payment interface (UPI) enabled allowing the commuters to pay the toll amounts directly from their bank accounts. Two technologies, mobile-based Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and mobile-based ultrasound technologies, currently being tested, would be used for making such payments. The system in these technologies will first identify the toll lane and then ensure automatic deduction from the wallet or the bank account through the UPI gateway.
Another approach currently being tried and tested is the free-flow or gantry-based tolling, which is incorporated across highways in Taiwan. This proficient system could eliminate the toll gates completely. The electronic gantry based tolling will make use of RFID technology enabled FASTags for automatic deduction of toll amounts. But, the requisites of such a system would require a massive overhaul of the Indian Highways sector before any talks of implementation can proceed any further.
The Highways Operations division of the NHAI continues to set incredibly high benchmarks of remarkable performance and execution with its head, Mr Akhilesh Srivastava at the helm, orchestrating the future-centric functioning of the organisation aimed at digitalising the roadways in India.
