Imagine that while travelling on the highways if you can get the real-time updates such as expected waiting time at toll plazas and paying toll fee without halting and getting SMS alerts for it, facility to report the emergencies/accidents or any infrastructure related problems such as potholes etc. Yes, it can be a great relief for the highway commuters and the good news is that dream has come to reality. Thanks to the rigorous efforts of the National Highway Authority of India, an autonomous agency of the Government of India working under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, to take the National Highway infrastructure of India to new heights.
All these features mentioned above are now available in your palms in the form of a mobile application called Sukhad Yatra, which was launched by the Honourable Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India Mr Nitin Gadkari on 7th March 2018. He said, at the launch event, that this move will empower the commuters to share their highway travel experience and help the road ministry improve public services on national highways.
This public-friendly app is the brainchild of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and it enables the highway commuters to report accidents/emergencies, road quality information/feedback and track amenities such as restaurants, petrol pumps and hospitals on national highways. In addition to that, this app can also be used to buy the FASTag sticker, an RFID-enabled tag to enable automatic toll fee deduction and let commuters pass through the toll plaza without halting for a cash transaction.
In the same event, another advantageous service has been launched by Mr Gadkari i.e. the 1033 ? Highway Emergency Toll-Free Number, which will enable users to report an emergency for instant support from the authorities. The emergency toll-free number has been integrated with various services such as ambulances, tow away cranes etc. along the highways, which ensures the rapid response at the time of an emergency. For the users? ease, this service has been designed with the multi-lingual support and it also tracks the user location to provide them with accurate and responsive complaint resolution.
Apart from the launch of these services for highway commuters, the honourable Minister also announced the Road Transport and Highways Ministry?s plan to initiate at least one model driving training centre in each district and Union Territories of India. The main objective of this scheme is to create employment and meet the requirements of HMV (Heavy Motor Vehicle) and LMV (Light Motor Vehicle) drivers in the country. Each of these centres will receive the financial assistance of up to Rs one crore from the Ministry. The other objective behind this scheme is to inculcate the habit of road safety, by inducing behavioural and attitudinal changes among drivers and there will be special training courses for the drivers who carry dangerous and hazardous goods. The agencies, who will be opening such training centres will provide infrastructure facilities like land, classrooms and simulators etc for proper training.
The MoRTH has also come up with the scheme for grant of financial assistance, in which the ministry will provide the financial assistance for administering Road Safety Advocacy and also give the awards for outstanding work in the field of Road Safety awareness. Under this scheme, the assistance of up to Rs five lakh will be provided to the NGOs, Cooperative Societies, Trusts and other agencies, who are administering road safety programmes. Three awards of Rs five lakh, Rs two lakh and Rs one lakh will be given in each India State and Union Territories to the individuals/agencies, who have been actively engaged in the road safety advocacy and allied activities.
With all these updates and launches, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) have displayed their dedication towards the overall development of the Highway Infrastructure of India. With the help of all these facilities and services, the Indian Highways will soon be providing the world-class facilities to its commuters
