Huge disappointment for women, Govt refuses to remove tax on Sanitary Napkins

New Delhi: Exactly a week after the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) General Secretary Shalini Thackeray met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley demanding the GST on Sanitary Napkins be removed, the Govt today has decided not to remove the tax on Sanitary napkins.

Arun Jaitley when asked in the press briefing following the meeting if tax on Sanitary napkins would be revised, he replied in the negative saying it would remain the same.

\"It is a huge disappointment that the Govt has not acted on our request. But are we really surprised? After all women\'s issues have been reduced to being part of election agendas. However, since my meeting with the Finance Minister was very positive I am still hopeful that he will do the needful. Was hopeful that justice would be a done today,\" said Shalini Thackeray on the decision by the Govt.

The decision came as the all powerful GST council met in the capital to review the some of the rates on which the industry had expressed displeasure, besides amending the draft rules.

This was the 16th meeting of the Council, chaired by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and comprising state counterparts, since it was set up in September 2016.

Shalini Thackeray had presented a detailed charter to the Finance Minister last week listing out her party\'s demands to ensure that women get a reprieve from the severe tax pressure on sanitary napkins.

Thackeray has also asked the Finance Minister to encourage installation of sanitary napkin vending machines in schools across the country. Among her other suggestions is that multinational manufacturers of sanitary napkins be asked to step forward and install vending machines and incinerators in schools and colleges across the country as part of their CSR activities
