The jury awarded Spalter $5 million for emotional distress and mental anguish, $5 million for psychological injuries, $3 million for permanency of injuries and $2 million for loss of life?s activities. She was also awarded $5 million in punitive damages
Attorney Eric Reinken, who tried the case with New York City attorney Michael Dowd, said, ?This verdict sends a message that the community will not tolerate sexual abuse.?
Harold Spalter the abusive father, died in 2014. He was a former captain in the U.S. Air Force and distinguished eye doctor at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical in New York City. Elizabeth testified in court that her father assaulted her many times in the family?s summer home in Shippan between 1975 and 1986, when she was 6 to 17 years old.
She also stated that she would not have had the strength and the courage to speak out without all the support of the other survivors, who also had the bravery to overcome the shame and secrecy that surrounds child sexual abuse. Spalter has been receiving counseling since the 1990s at the Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling.
Elizabeth also said that the jury was very brave in providing justice which affects not just her but all the victims of child sexual abuse and holds perpetrators accountable.
Dowd also added that one of the things that keep all the children who are the victims of sexual abuse silent was the worry that they won?t be believed. But the jury did not let it pass this time.
