Serbian Government retracts its ‘Russian-inspired anti-abortion council’

Serbian government officials are busy putting out fires, with the uproar that was caused due to the governments? alleged plans to introduce a state council that will work to dissuade women from pregnancy termination. Government officials are calming public reaction and stating that the alleged plans of appointing an anti-abortion administrative body was all a misunderstanding.
The Minister responsible for demography and population policy (without portfolio) commented to a pro-government tabloid that the state was planning to form a council that would ?raise awareness among Serbian women about the harmful side effects about pregnancy cancellation?. Several other media outlets had also caught upon the statement. As per another news report, this alleged governmental body would proffer counseling for pregnant women on conception and its termination. This session would include priests, civil sector and various other experts that would assist in the consultation.
Highest numbers in Europe
Serbia is a country with 7 million populations, and a domestic media claims that Serbia is one of the top countries that buy abortion pills and access abortive services in Europe. Allegedly, approximately 200,000 procedures take place each year, not to mention those that are done unreported; Even so, the official figure from the Serbian institute of public health in 2015 was 16,863 abortive procedures.
Primarily this news about the anti-abortive council is said to have been inspired by Russia, which itself is a country that is a leading nation that buy abortion pill and access services. A demographer was quoted in the above news report, praising the Russian model of co-operation between the church and the state. As according to her, such council in Russia ?encouraged women to preserve life? and of course lowers the rates of pregnancy cancellation.
Public backlash to the anti-abortive council
Public response to the council proposition was harsh, with many condemning the government with use of social media. Many twitted that any kind of restrictions of pregnancy termination would increase the number of women accessing illegal services, endangering their life and health. While others commented on the Serbian Orthodox Church and it?s tax exempt status, that according to many, could be used for birth rate increasing measures.
Government?s response
The Minister?s response to the outrage was a denial, noting that a woman?s right to end a pregnancy was ?un-alienable?. He then stated that no council will be formed as a separate body, but the state will increase its efforts in introducing counseling service in the existing abortive clinics which will also have experts from other fields, he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also supported the Minister?s statement that no separate anti-pregnancy termination council will be formed, yet she also commented on the state?s need for a council which would exclusively deal with issues regarding growth of birth rate. She also dismissed the idea that the government was colluding with the Church (which is a pro-life advocate).
Learning from an example
In fact Serbian government wouldn?t have to imagine a world where it is prohibited to buy abortion pill packs or seek surgeries. The neighboring country, Macedonia where abortion is severely restricted has increased the number of infanticide and illegal abortions.
