Peradesign furniture store opens in Paramus

The 8,000 square foot store sells modern and contemporary furniture manufactured in Turkey.

Eris Alkan wanted the exterior fa?ade of the store he was opening on southbound Route 17 in Paramus to reflect what he sells inside it, and to resemble a piece of fine furniture.

Alkan, the owner of the new Peradesign modern furniture store, thinks that effort was worth it, even though it delayed the opening of the store for six months and increased his start-up costs.

For most of this year, motorists on Route 17 have watched as workers installed angled panels resembling polished pieces of wood on the exterior of the freestanding building, and then removed sections of the fa?ade and reinstalled the panels.

Multidimensional fa?ade

The panels are made with natural wood veneers coated to protect them from the elements. ?I just had to have them,? Alkan said when he saw the product, created by a Spanish company that has installed them on projects ranging from private homes to the Aspen Art Museum. Even so, the lengthy installation cost him many sleepless nights. The panels have to be angled properly in order to create the intended multidimensional effect.

Now, he is hoping that the eye-catching fa?ade will help draw customers to his store, which opened two weeks ago. ?When people are passing by they should say, ?Wow, what is that?? ? he said.

?My dream always was to open a store in the United States, but it had to be unique ? not only the furniture but the store look as well,? said Alkan, who moved to the United States from Turkey in 1999.

?Our purpose is to bring to the United States very distinctive furniture that people haven?t seen,? he said. Most of the items in the showroom are designs that are exclusive to his store.

Modern movement

The 8,000-square-foot store sells modern and contemporary furniture made in Alkan's homeland of Turkey. Peradesign is the latest in a string of modern and contemporary furniture stores to open along Route 17 in Paramus in recent years. Alkan said the designs are similar to the clean, contemporary looks at places like Roche BoBois, Design Within Reach and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, but at a lower price.

Sofas at Peradesign start at $1,500 and range up to $6,000 to $7,000. The store also is a distributor for the modern lighting design company Pablo, and for accessories by British designer Tom Dixon.

Alkan said he and his investors spent about $1 million on the exterior and interior of the store, and that the delay in opening added about another $500,000 to his costs.

But since opening, he said, he has been pleased with the reactions from shoppers, and with his initial sales.

Peradesign is named after the fashion district of Istanbul, the part of the city where passengers arriving from Paris would disembark from the Orient Express and shop. The district used to bear the Greek name of Pera but now is known by the Turkish word Beyoglu.

Alkan, 40, a Fort Lee resident, has worked at other furniture retailers, including for Lazzoni, another importer of Turkish furniture, with stores in Paramus and New York City.

Online sales

Peradesign also sells its imported furniture online, and Alkan said e-commerce sales helped him survive the delay in opening the store. He said he has shipped many orders to the West Coast, Texas and Florida.

Furniture pieces that are in stock in the company's warehouse in Lyndhurst are available within a few days, Alkan said. Custom orders take about 14 weeks to arrive from Turkey.
