Hindus have commended Canada for finally deciding to put a Canadian woman on its currency for the first time, although they feel that this decision came very late.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, called it a step in the positive direction. World should treat women with equality and respect they deserved, he added.

Why it took so long for Canada to realize that Canadian women, who had made lot of contributions to the nation and society and shaped the country, deserved a place on Canadian currency? Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, wondered.

Rajan Zed, quoting scriptures, explained that ancient Manusmriti said: ?Where women are revered, there the gods are pleased; where they are not, no rite will yield any fruit.?

Bank of Canada Governor Stephen S. Poloz, Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Canadian Minister of Status of Women Patty Hajdu will announce on December eight in Gatineau (Quebec) which iconic Canadian woman will be featured on the next regularly circulating bank note, expected in 2018.

Launched in 1935 and headquartered in Ottawa, the Bank of Canada is the nation\'s central bank, whose principal role is ?to promote the economic and financial welfare of Canada?; and one of its main areas of responsibility is to design, issue and distribute Canada?s bank notes. Filipe Dinis is the Chief Operating Officer, while Richard Wall is Currency Chief.
