Another Vikings loss moves the Dallas Cowboys to #1 in the latest Ultimate Sports Network?s NFL Ranking. Dallas, by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 29-23 in overtime, hold a slim lead on the New England Patriots. Both only have one loss, but the Cowboys strength of schedule is just a bit more stringent than the Patriots.
Again, the statistical anomaly is the winless Cleveland Browns. Having dropped another game, this one a 31-28 loss to the New York Jets, the Browns hover near the middle of the pack at #17, just one place ahead of the defending NFC Champion Carolina Panthers.
The Ultimate Sports Network attempts to answer the question, ?Who is Number One?? by multiplying a team?s winning percentage by their "control points", then by their schedule strength.
Who won the game? This is fairly simple. It is better to win a game than to lose, and just picture George "Papa Bear" Halas or Don Shula, or even Pete Carroll addressing his team after a loss and saying, "Well, boys we fought hard and I am glad to see we only lost by three on the road." Good teams win on the road, bad teams don't. So USN does not factor if a game was played at home or on the road.
Point number two. Who controlled the game? Basically, was a win achieved because the other team missed an extra point or because a play was overturned by replay, or was the outcome never in doubt? Third, not only who was played, but how did they play against their competition.
"Control points" are the value USN has given to a team's margin of victory or defeat. The Ultimate Sports Networks ranking system assigns 1 point for a win, 1 point for a win by less than a field goal, up to 6 points for a win by 20 points or more. A loss is deducted in the same manner. That figure is then multiplied by the opponent?s 1USN points, times a factor of 25%.
The same criteria is used to determine strength of schedule. Simply take the average control points total of the opponents that have been played to determine strength of schedule.
