There are reportedly plans to convert an old empty warehouse into a Hindu temple in Southend-on-Sea in Essex (England).

According to reports, an application has been filed with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council. Priest Gowrisankar Sellappa is among those who are behind the project; which besides a sanctum for worship, will also include kitchen. An area architect, Russell Munro, is helping design the warehouse conversion.

Meanwhile, distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, commended efforts of leaders of this proposed temple and area community for realizing this Hindu place of worship.

Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said that it was important to pass on Hindu spirituality, concepts and traditions to coming generations amidst so many distractions in the consumerist society and hoped that this temple would help in this direction. Zed stressed that instead of running after materialism; we should focus on inner search and realization of Self and work towards achieving moksh (liberation), which was the goal of Hinduism.

Southend-on-Sea, generally mentioned as simply Southend, is a seaside resort town and is home to world?s longest leisure pier. Judith McMahon is the Mayor, while Rob Tinlin is Chief Executive.
