In spite of the intense heat which reached 100 degrees, racers and spectators alike at Willow Springs International Raceway were all high as they cheered for the 11 teams competing for SoCal Spec E30 race series.
Steve Stepanian, who was sponsored by Jim Stepanian of Summerlin Asset Management, had a bad start as he lost his second gear. He was able to regain his footing, though.
The change for Steve Stepanian happened on the exit of Turn 7 where he was able to drift past Young. Each lap afterward became a competition between the two, making the other racers fall back and just watch the duel on the racetracks. In the end, Stepanian won by .264 seconds over Young.
On Sunday's race, Stepanian and Young were the same ones still fighting for the lead. Stepanian came out the winner in his second race of the weekend when Young went off on Turn 2. Afterward, the nose to tail battle for second place continued for the other three other racers: Daly, Buzzetti, and Young. Daly finished second; Buzzetti assumed the third place and Young finished off as fourth.
It was indeed a great checkers weekend for Steve Stepanian and his sponsors, Jimmy Stepanian and Summerlin.
