UNESCO Sites of Southern India to Be Showcased Through Royal Journey of Maharajas' Express

The most popular luxury tourist train, the Maharajas Express operated by Indian Railway Catering and Tourist Corporation will promote and exhibit the splendid ruins of Hampi, the heritage sites of Pattadakal and the enriched culture of Mysuru to the tourists on its first southern circuit.

Being launched in March 2010, the train has covered around 36 trips in Northern and Central region of India but has not traversed down the southern region. According to the sources of IRCTC, the journey will commence from Mumbai, taking the passengers to the selected destinations of Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The sources further included, ?We plan to run two trips between August and September 2017. Since such tours are planned a year in advance by foreign tourists, we are going all out to finalize our partners in providing the services within the next 30 to 45 days.? The schedule and package charges for the maiden Southern venture to be operated by IRCTC are still to be finalized.

A source said that the journey will cover the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Hampi and Pattadakal in Karnataka, along with Mysuru. In Tamil Nadu, it will include visits to Mahabalipuram and Karaikudi (or Madurai). The southern package will also cover Kochi, the backwaters of Alleppey and Kumarakom. Thiruvananthapuram will be the point, where the train will terminate. The returning trip will get terminated at Mumbai.

Although the packages of Maharajas? Express are costlier than any other luxury train tours in India yet they are much sought after unlike the tour packages offered by 'Golden Chariot?, the only luxury train of India, run by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation covering South India.

A top official positively replied, ?Almost 95 percent of our clientele are from abroad. Our luxury package caters to an elite section and will not pose any competition to the state-run luxury train,? when he was asked if the entry of Maharajas? Express into the South could any way hurt the prospects of Golden Chariot.
