This report provides a comprehensive assessment of software testing services globally in terms of spending patterns, service offerings available in the market, client demand for testing services, delivery locations and next-generation offerings.
Spending around software testing will see accelerated growth in 2014 and 2015, largely thanks to improving economic conditions. Demand remains strong for multi-year managed testing services contracts involving Indian offshore-based delivery, with centralized testing activities and using standardized processes and tools, with vendors benefiting from their investments in reusable artifacts.
Raviart commented: "Vendors have expanded their portfolio from traditional functional/non-functional testing activities to a range of specialized services". Examples of new services include crowd-testing mostly for web site and mobile app usability testing; and test support services, which now includes the traditional test data management, environment provisioning but also service virtualization and release management.
"The testing services industry is a vibrant industry and still expanding", Raviart commented.
Increasing usage of proprietary IP and tools is also a significant trend in the industry. Several vendors are conducting a comprehensive review of their current IPs, looking to identify and fill in any functionality gaps, or creating meta-tools. According to Raviart, "meta-tools aim to integrate existing IPs and COTS testing software and automate testing activities in the testing life cycle.
Nevertheless, vendor investments in portfolio development and in IPs and tools, do not meet the main challenge of software testing: it remains a labor-intensive activity requiring specific skills. "Today, approximately 25,000 IT professionals are becoming career testers. This is very significant and has deep implications in terms of training all these new testing professionals" says Raviart.
In the long-term, the testing industry needs to become more non-linear. Platform-based testing is one of the possibilities that could help transitioning this industry to a more sustainable model. "However, we are at the very early stage of adoption of platform-based testing. The reinvention of the testing industry is only starting", added Raviart.
