Drop in Smoking Rate Coincides with Prostate Cancer Death Decline

Founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute discusses the possible connection.

Irving, TX, August 14, 2016 ? As fewer people across the country light up on a regular basis, the number of prostate cancer-related deaths is on the decline. While a definitive connection between smoking and the initial development of prostate cancer remains under study, researchers have noted smoking seems to play a role in elevated death risks when prostate cancer is diagnosed.

?The possible connection between prostate cancer deaths and smoking has long been suspected,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?Although more work needs to be done to confirm the link with certainty, this most recent study offers eye-opening insights.?

The study involved data related to four states: Maryland, Utah, California and Kentucky. Over the course of 11 years, researchers noted declines in both prostate cancer deaths and tobacco use in these four states. The declines were most notable in both areas in Maryland and Kentucky. Prostate cancer deaths in these two stated dropped by about 3.5 percent a year in these two areas. The rate of smoking also dipped by 3 percent a year. Similar declines, albeit on a smaller scale, were noted in California and Utah.

?Both sets of numbers are extremely encouraging,? says Dr. Echt. ?Whether smoking is directly connected to prostate cancer outcomes does remain under study, but there is no doubt this habit can greatly enhance risks for many other life-limiting diseases. Kicking the habit is critical for those who want to lower their risks for many forms of cancer while improving overall health in the process.?

Men, and women, who struggle with tobacco addictions are urged to talk to their doctors about cessation options. Whether kicking the habit for men will lower prostate cancer risks does remain unclear, but this latest study adds more to the evidence pile that it could very well help lower morbidity risks should the disease develop.
