PSA Testing Advocates Earn Win with Medicare

For many of the thousands of American men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, the prostate-specific antigen test is the tool that will set off early alarm bells in their cases. This test, heavily under fire in recent years, just won a victory that advocates have been hoping for.

?It is looking much more likely that Medicare will opt against penalizing doctors who continue to use this simple, but important screening tool in their practices,? explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?Although far from perfect, the PSA is a vital screening test for the prostate cancer. Having the continued ability to use this test on a flexible basis until a suitable, more accurate replacement is found is important for men and their doctors.?

The PSA was taken off the table as a routine screening recommendation by the United States Preventative Services Task Force a few years ago. Maligned for its track record of false positives, the test?s use has waned for routine screening in recent years while remaining very much in play during monitoring of diagnosed prostate cancer cases. Despite its imperfections, many doctors and researchers have found that the test remains one of the most reliable ways to detect prostate cancer early. When its use is repeated prior to more aggressive interactions, false positives can sometimes be ruled out, increasing accuracy.

Medicare has been considering levying a penalty on doctors who continue to use the PSA even though advocates say the test remains important. A recent recommendation against a penalty from the American Urological Association is hoped to stop the move in its tracks, keeping this test more readily available to doctors and men who choose to use it.

?Only time will tell for sure what will happen, but the recent recommendation offers hope,? says Dr. Echt. ?Despite its imperfections, the PSA can and does offer early insights into the possible presence of prostate cancer. Men and their doctors should have the ability to pursue this simple blood screen if they so choose.?

Prostate cancer strikes an estimated 180,000 American men each year. All men are urged to talk to their doctors about their risks and what early screening tests they should undertake on a routine basis.
