Historical Writers Conference in Colonial Williamsburg

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG, VA, August 05, 2016 - America?s Prohibition lasted 13 long years, a dark period for drinkers in the U.S. But the country’s founders-fur trappers, pilgrims and presidents were anything but teetotalers.



They drank a lot, says author and historian Libby O’Connell, the keynote speaker at a three-day conference in Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, hosted by the Historical Writers of America.



In fact, the colonists drank about twice as much beer, wine, rum and whisky as Americans do today, says O’Connell, chief historian for The History Channel and author of The American Plate: A Culinary History in 100 Bites. Libby will talk about food and history at the August 19 to 21 conference, which is expected to draw writers from around the country.



Workshops and classes on writing, research and publishing round out the conference experience. Larry Brooks, the author of Story Engineering and Story Fix, and Chris C.C. Humphreys, the author of ten adult novels and a YA series, will present classes on storytelling and novel writing.



Attendees can also pitch their books and ideas to a dozen agents and editors interested in everything from memoirs to historic romance to literary nonfiction. “It’s a great chance for writers to talk to the people at the heart of the industry the agents who sell books to publishers,” says Theresa Guzman Stokes, executive director of the HWA, a nonprofit group dedicated to fiction and nonfiction writers who focus on the past.



The conference fee for HWA members is $445, or $520 for a membership and conference pass. Pre-conference workshops on Friday are extra. Single day passes are also available.

Other presenters at the convention include historical novelist Margaret George, the author of The Autobiography of Henry VIII, Helen of Troy and Elizabeth I. Her 1997 book, The Memoirs of Cleopatra, was made into an ABC miniseries. Weina Dai Randel, the author of The Moon in the Palace and The Empress of Bright Moon, will also attend. Born and raised in China, she has worked as a journalist, a magazine editor, and an adjunct professor.



Some speakers will tackle specific historic topics, such as Christine Trent’s talk, “Death Becomes Her: Exploring the Myths and Realities of Victorian Funerals and Mourning Customs.”
