Tumor-Specific Prostate Cancer Treatments on the Horizon

Irving, TX ? Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer is among the most difficult forms of this disease to treat. Researchers believe they may have found a way to make the process at least a little more successful. Thanks to the discovery of a tumor marker in the blood, researchers believe they can now more readily determine which types of this cancer are likely to respond to the chemotherapy drug docetaxel and which ones might not.

The simple blood test meant to determine prostate cancer tumor type has held up well in small-scale trials so far. Its widespread use, however, won?t happen until it stands up against larger trials. Even so, researchers and doctors are hopeful the test may one day enable better, more targeted treatments for this aggressive form of prostate cancer.

?Being able to better understand tumor makeup and target treatments more effectively could save critical treatment time for men with castration-resistant forms of the disease,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?This could potentially lead to more positive outcomes in regard to longevity.?

Castration-resistant prostate cancer is a type that does not respond to treatments meant to starve cancer from their hormone-based fuels. This form of prostate cancer is considered among the deadliest, making breakthroughs in treatment especially welcomed by practitioners.

?How much of an impact tumor typing will ultimately have on this form of prostate cancer remains to be seen,? says Dr. Echt. ?Even so, this is a positive step forward that might lead to faster, more effective treatments for different tumor types.?

About 180,000 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. About 26,000 die from the disease. Many of these men happen to have metastatic castration-resistant forms of the disease.
