Argentinet showcases the beauty of Los Glaciares National Park. As one of the many highlights of any Argentina tour, this park is a top favorite among many tourists, local and international alike.

Argentina boasts of a long list of must visit destinations. Los Glaciares National Park in particular is made famous by Perito Moreno glacier that has a length of 35 kilometers, 5 kilometers width and 60 meters height.

The glacier itself is probably the very first thing that will come to mind when people think of Argentina?s national parks. Much bigger is Upsala Glacier that is 50 meters high and 60 kilometers long. In the northern sector of the park, Mount FitzRoy challenges the mountain climbers from all over the world to its summit of 3,375 meters.

Several thousand years ago, glaciers cover the entire park and the present enormous ice fields that remained to this day and the colossal glaciated moraines and valleys suggest how intense that long gone ice age was.

Once the climate became warmer, glaciers started to melt and retreated to their present strongholds on the surrounding mountains. This retreat went on as climate grew warm at a fast pace. The area gets about 8 meters of precipitation every year, more than Amazon rainforest, yet in the form of snow. Perito Moreno Glacier moves 1.5 to 2 meters per day. But, the front of glacier calves off equally so that the glacier remains less or more at the same location. The breaking of Perito Moreno Glacier is very popular, especially when the ice crosses Canal de los Tempanos, which connects Brazo Rico to Lago Argentino.

Several years ago, the whole park was covered by glaciers and the big icefields remain and the big glaciated valleys as well as moraines suggest the ice age?s intensity.

Therefore, Brazo Rico is cut off and the water level rises as this continues to get rainwater and the melting snow and ice from the glaciers and mountains. Eventually, the water pressure starts to push past the point of glacier?s contact with the land, which creates a small tunnel.

The thirty percent of this park is covered in glaciers, which are 365 glaciers in total. The 13 biggest of those on Atlantic watershed are Marconi, Perito Moreno, Moyano, Viedma, Agassiz, Upsala, Onelli, Bolado, Spegazzini, Pieneta, Mayo, Frias, and Ameghino glaciers.
