Fishing is a time honored tradition, but in our day we may not know how to prepare the food we catch. A renowned rustic resort in Canada has put together a few recipes to help its visitors make the most out of the day's catch.

Wildewood, one of two lodges on Lake Savant in northwestern Ontario, has introduced a new feature on its website which presents recipes for healthy meals. These recipes are written with Ontario fishing tourism in mind, and so many are based around fish that can be caught locally. Recipes include Walleye Casserole, Wildewood Walleye Seviche, and Wildewood Smoked Lake Trout.

Fish are a healthy, lean protein. Wild-caught fish are especially good for people, as their diets are natural and their environment allows the fish to grow and flourish. That is, providing their environment is not contaminated by modern pollutants. Lake Savant is one such locale, very little development has occurred, making it ideal for fishing and hunting trips.

Matt Neufeld, Wildewood's owner, grew up with a love of hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He fell in love with Wildewood and bought the resort in 2008. Since then, Neufeld has worked hard to turn the resort into an ideal hunting and fishing getaway. The lodge is located 75 miles east of Sioux Lookout, and is still a remote and pristine patch of wilderness. One of Lake Savant's appeals is its isolated location. It is still considered a fly-in environment, though Neufeld has made it possible for a shuttle van to bring guests to the lodge. This service has proven effective at maintaining the natural isolated surroundings of Wildewood while also making it easier for tourists to enjoy the beauty of Lake Savant.

Socio-economic studies show that local concern over the development of Ontario fishing tourism is largely based upon the desire to preserve the integrity of Ontario's history and culture. Encouraging healthy local eating through these new recipes shows that Wildewood on Lake Savant wants to build public appreciation for Ontario and its natural resources, while at the same time being a key asset and guide for Ontario fishing tourism.

A stay at Wildewood on Lake Savant begins with a simple meal, hot dogs and chips, at an orientation dinner which allows guests to mingle and to benefit from Neufeld's local knowledge of the lake. After that first night, guests are free to prepare whatever food they may have brought with them or caught during the day; each cabin is outfitted with a fully equipped kitchen, including a charcoal grill and fish fryer outside. It is Neufeld's hope that with Wildewood's amenities, along with these new recipes, guests will be able to enjoy the best possible dining experience that Lake Savant has to offer.
