Founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute discusses the new possibility.
Irving, TX, Researchers may have found a new, low invasive way to help screen for prostate cancer that is more accurate than the old prostate-specific antigen test once commonly recommended for all men over the age of 50. The new blood test under development looks at a greater number of biomarkers to make a more definitive determination.
Currently known as STHLM3, the new test looks for six specific protein markers and more than 200 genetic markers to better screen for the presence or absence of prostate cancer in men. The findings are combined with clinical data, such as family history and past biopsies, to help determine if more action might be required. So far, the test has proven itself quite reliable at detecting aggressive prostate cancers even in men who have had low PSA results in the past.
Although much more research is required before this new blood test might replace other screening protocols, it is an exciting development to say the least, says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. While prostate cancer is considered to be among the most treatable forms of cancer, the reality is current screening procedures are far from perfect. The PSA, while once the gold standard in detection, is known for false positives that can open men up to a host of potentially unnecessary risks. Even so, screening should remain an important part of every mans medical routine later in life.
With an estimated 180,000 American men likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, it is recommended that all men age 50 and older talk to their healthcare providers about their personal risks. Men who are at higher risk for the disease may find that screening with the tools now available is critical for helping detect this potentially fatal condition as soon as possible.
The STHLM3 test and other possible screening procedures may soon make it much easier and more accurate to detect prostate cancer, says Dr. Echt. In the meantime, the tools available have been credited with saving countless lives.
