The Hampton Roads chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association, located in Virginia Beach, has announced its annual charity walk-a-thon on April 9, 2016. The event will raise money to combat Parkinson's Disease, helping to raise awareness and fighting to find a cure for a disease that has never had one.
More information can be found on the Hampton Roads APDA website at: http://hrparkinsons.com.
Parkinson Disease in the United States affects more than 1.2 million people and worldwide more than 6 million. Parkinson's Disease is a progressive brain disorder resulting in a loss of dopamine production, a substance that is essential to normal nerve activity in the brain. Presently there is no cure, and the American Parkinson Disease Association is committed to finding one.
The charity walk, called the Boardwalk Stroll and Roll" will be located at 31st Street and the oceanfront, and is an annual event that anyone can take part in to help contribute to Parkinson's Disease research. It begins at 9am and concludes at 1pm, regardless of weather, so rain or shine local residents can enjoy themselves and help to fight Parkinson's at the same time.
There will be a medical pavilion at the event that features medical specialists, physical therapist, exercise programs, Parkinson medications, and Parkinson support groups. In addition to that, there will be movement and mobility equipment allowing anyone to take part, legal services, transportation information, healthcare providers, and disability awareness advocates.
The stroll itself is set across nine blocks across the boardwalk for walkers and anyone with mobility devices. There is also a bike roll, across a ten mile stretch of road from 48 Street and Atlantic through first Landing State Park, ending at Neptune Park. The American Parkinson Disease Association hopes that the variety of options on offer will encourage more people to engage with the event and help to raise as much money as possible.
The APDA is the largest not-for-profit grassroots organization serving Americans with Parkinson's disease. Anyone wanting more information or to register for the event can call 757-495-3062.
