David Parker, owner of Charlotte plumbing company E.R. Plumbing Services, volunteers weekly with the local charity Room in the Inn, but he also asks his staff to volunteer with him once a year. "Our annual service event this year was March 15th at Arlington Baptist in Mint Hill," Parker says. " This year it was it was all about grilling and cooking for us. We made chicken wings, pasta salad, macaroni, vegetable trays and several cakes so the folks in need would have full bellies to sleep on."

In addition to providing food for people in need, the E.R. Plumbing Services staff provided material goods and sponsored a place for people in need to sleep. "We had several gentlemen in need of just simple t-shirts that we were able to provide. After getting beds ready and feeding everyone, we stayed up talking and hearing stories and laughing. My staff is more filled up by serving than the people we were serving, and we believe this attitude will always overflow into the daily homes we visit for plumbing needs. The staff loves serving through Room in the Inn and can't wait each year to be a part of reaching out to our community and positively impacting others."

"Over the years, we have probably had 15 different employees volunteer," Parker says. "We serve in whatever way is most needed, including serving the food, making dinner, lunch, and breakfast, or staying the night and cleaning up. We also pick people up at Urban Ministry and drop them off at the bus station in the morning."

When asked for particulars, Parker said, "We provide a hot dinner and snacks and prepare the following day's lunch and breakfast. We provide a bed to sleep on with a movie at night and clean showers. Most of all we show the people love, laughter, and friendship with a good night's sleep, meals, and a place to clean up if they so choose to use it. We serve men, women, children, and babies. We serve 10 at a time because that's all our bus can handle."
