Founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute discusses the benefits of adding this step in treatment.
Irving, TX, March16, 2016 ? An estimated 200,000 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in any given year. Some of those men will find their form of cancer requires very little action thanks to its slow-growing nature. Others, however, will learn locally advanced prostate cancer is their concern. In those cases, researchers are finding a combination of treatments may help improve outcome over the long haul.
Traditional therapy for locally advanced prostate cancer involves the use of androgen-deprivation therapy. This hormone therapy procedure is used to help slow the cancer while aiming to keep quality of life high for patients. It works by essentially starving cancer cells of the fuel they need to spread and grow. More of a maintenance measure, this therapy works well for a time but is known to lose its effectiveness. Researchers have found, however, that combining this hormone therapy with radiotherapy can greatly increase survival rates.
?Recent studies have shown that adding in this extra step can greatly increase the overall survival rate of men in the years that follow treatment,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?This extra step has been shown to produce positive results when combined with standard androgen-deprivation therapy.?
One of the most recent studies on this form of prostate cancer looked at more than 1,000 men who either received hormone therapy alone or in combination with radiotherapy. The men who received both treatments had a significantly higher survival rate at the eight-year mark. While side effects reported went up in the radiotherapy group, the survival rate was high enough that researchers are strongly urging men and their doctors to consider combination therapy to treat locally advanced prostate cancer.
?While treatment decisions are highly personal and should be carefully discussed with a healthcare provider, there are options that may improve longevity when locally advanced prostate cancer is diagnosed,? says Dr. Echt. ?Adding radiotherapy into the treatment plan may offer more hope for some men over the long run.?
