Your Area Home Team has released a new report outlining the impact of social media on personal injury law, cautioning claimants of the increasing role it plays in personal injury cases. The report provides real-life case study examples to demonstrate the legal implications social media is beginning to have on personal injury claims. The full report can be read by following this link: [http://www.yourareahometeam.ca/how-the-rise-of-soc...](http://www.yourareahometeam.ca/how-the-rise-of-social-media-has-affected-personal-injury-law).

Social media usage amongst the global population has increased since the rise of mobile technology. Figures released in 2015 reveal that over 50 percent of the world's population are mobile phone users whilst almost 30 percent use social media, with 23 percent of people accessing social media accounts from a mobile device; and those statistics have since most likely risen.

Anyone finding themselves in a personal injury claim suit could quickly discover that social media posts such as comments, check-ins and images uploaded on Facebook can be used as evidence to support the defense case, particularly as they contain date and time stamps. As such, lawyers are cautioning their clients to exercise vigilance regarding personal information when they post to social media accounts, according to the report.

Social media evidence is being used increasingly to weed out false personal injury claims, including organised scams which are quite common in the insurance industry. Defense teams have been known to scour social media for evidence against personal injury claimants to catch them out in a false claim, presenting countless pages of evidence in cases.

As social media evidence plays a relatively new role in such cases, there are still questions surrounding the accuracy of the portrayal of people's lives on media such as Facebook. This is because many people tend to deliberately portray themselves in a positive light by posting happy, sociable images of themselves having fun avoiding negativity, personal problems and unhappiness all together.

Regardless, the report states that as a precaution personal injury lawyers are asking their clients to refrain from making unnecessary posts to social media in the case that they prove to be detrimental in a claim.
