ACC introduces Portable Libraries for Government schools in Jaipur

Jaipur, January 2016: ACC Limited has joined hands with Pratham NGO to introduce 300 portable libraries in more than 150 government schools in Jaipur. The initiative aims to provide a solution to the alarming school dropout of 13 lakh per year observed in the state of Rajasthan which resulted in a low literacy rate of 67%.
The inability of developing basic skills such as comprehension, writing, reading and communication has been the main cause for a high number of students being unable to continue their education past middle school in the state. Many of these schools struggle with basic infrastructure and most do not have access to a library, which has been proven to play a large role in developing a child?s learning capabilities at the elementary level.
?ACC?s portable libraries are easy to set up and transfer and therefore travel from school to school periodically. Hence, each library reaches a large number of students. Additionally, to ensure vernacular language development and keeping in mind the varied background of students, these libraries contain books in various languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Urdu and Bengali?, explained Mr. Pratyush Panda, Corporate Head-CSR at ACC Limited.
The implementation of this initiative has resulted in an increase in the enrolment of students and has also encouraged parents to support their child?s education.
ACC Lakheri Cement Works has consistently endeavoured to promote literacy among its surrounding community. In the future, ACC aims to replicate this effort in government schools in select cities in Maharashtra as well.
