Men’s Health Supplements No Boost For Prostate Health, Study Finds

Dozens of products that claim to help promote good prostate health may deliver only empty promises, a recent study has found. For men facing prostate cancer, in fact, the supplements may do more harm than good over the long haul.

The study, conducted by the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, tracked the benefits of men?s health supplements on men who were undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. All told, researchers looked at the cases of 2,207 men who underwent intensity-modulated radiation therapy. Of those men, about 10 percent told researchers they took supplements specifically marked for ?men?s health? or ?prostate health.? About half took some sort of supplement during their treatments. Those who consumed ?men?s health? supplements used products containing a variety of ingredients, but the most common was saw palmetto.

?The bottom line was that men?s health supplements had no apparent positive effect during the treatment of prostate cancer,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?They also did nothing to lower radiation-related side effects for men undergoing treatments.?

Beyond finding that supplements played no positive role in prostate cancer treatment, researchers also warned of the potential dangers of using such projects while undergoing cancer treatment. Some supplements, for example, are known to lessen the positive effects of treatments. That essentially produces an effect that is more harmful than positive, they said.

?Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer should carefully discuss all medications and supplements they are taking with their healthcare providers,? Dr. Echt urges. ?Some supplements are known to reduce treatment effectiveness, making it critical for doctors to know everything prescribed and over-the-counter patients are taking.?

An estimated 220,000 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. The best treatment options will depend on a man?s particular case.
