A website that offers free manga online cites the rise of manga?s global popularity, particularly after the outbreak of World War II and predicts that the genre will continue its growth worldwide.
In a statement, Hey Manga said that the Japanese comics literally means ?whimsical pictorial.? The term was coined by a wood engraver named Katsushika Hokusai who lived from 1760 to 1840 in one of his many publications.
?But it was not until World War II that the comics became a cultural phenomenon in Japan,? the website said. It credited artist Tezuka Osamu for fueling the growth of manga with internationally recognized works like Astro Boy, Black Jack, Buddha, among others.
Tezuka?s adaptation of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson sold nearly half a million copies to become the best-selling comics in the country which was remarkable as Japan?s economy was struggling as a result of its defeat in the war.
Hey Manga said the generation that enjoyed Tezuka?s works grew up in the 60s and 70s but continued to read manga. ?People started to view manga as something that was not only enjoyed by children but by adults, too,? it explained.
From the 80s to the turn of the new millennium, the genre underwent an evolution with the introduction of sophisticated techniques like screen tones that enhanced its looks. Story lines also became more complex to involve more interests like sports, religion, politics, and romance which pulled in more female readers.
The website predicts that manga will continue to appeal to a wider audience worldwide with new artists contributing to its growth.
