PSA Testing Linked to Lower Metastatic Prostate Cancer Rates

While the prostate-specific antigen test is no longer recommended on a widespread scale to detect the presence of prostate cancer, a new study points to its potential importance for men. Research is finding that this simple blood test can help drop the rate of metastatic prostate cancer by about 50 percent.

The findings of a study into the PSA test and metastatic prostate cancer was published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers found that within 7 years of this test?s initial 1990 introduction, the rate of metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis had dropped by about 50 percent. The findings indicate the test?s strength in helping men catch this disease early, before it has had a chance to spread.

The findings are especially timely since the use of this test as an early screening tool has declined in recent years. The United States Preventative Services Task Force recommended against the use of PSA screening in low-risk men. The recommended was prompted by false positives the test can produce, which some healthcare professionals worried were leading to unnecessary further screening that can be invasive in nature. The recommendation to take the PSA out of routine, low-risk screening has been heeded in many doctors? offices across the country, leading some in the medical profession to worry that prostate cancer may now be going undetected and untreated.

?The PSA isn?t a perfect test, to be sure, but it offers valuable insights into the potential presence of prostate cancer,? explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?While false positives are not unheard of, this test still serves as an important first line of defense against prostate cancer.?

Men who are age 50 or older are urged to discuss their risk for prostate cancer with their healthcare providers. Routine early screening can lead to early diagnosis of the disease and effective treatment, preventing the likelihood of metastatic forms of the disease developing.
