Study: No Link Between ProstateCancer, Testosterone Therapy

Men who turn to hormone therapy to combat some of the signs of aging may be able to breathe a sigh of relief. A new study has found that testosterone therapy does not significantly increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

?The study?s findings are encouraging to men who use medically prescribed testosterone therapy to counteract some of the side effects associated with normal aging,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?With prostate cancer striking an estimated 220,000 American men each year, taking steps to reduce risks is important. The research shows, however, that therapy designed to assist men in maintaining their energy and virility levels may not have an impact on overall odds for developing the disease.?

The University of Texas Medical Branch conducted the most recent study related to testosterone therapy and prostate cancer risk. To arrive at their findings, researchers reviewed the cases of 52,570 men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Of those men, only 574 reported using testosterone injections within the five-year period prior to their diagnosis of cancer. The number of men who used therapy and contracted the disease was considered insignificant, researchers noted.

?Medically supervised testosterone therapy can help men address such concerns as weight gain, emotional changes and decreased sensual function,? Dr. Echt said. ?It is important, however, for men to work closely with their doctors to determine if this form of therapy is the best option to address their complaints.?
