Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) and Gold Merchant Association, Anantapur organised an educational programme on the importance of commodity futures market, and the benefits of hedging in Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh) on December 13, 2015. It aimed at creating awareness on hedging bullion price exposures, and widening the participation of market players from the bullion industry on commodity futures exchanges.
The interactive programme was focused on the fundamentals of gold and silver, functioning of commodity exchanges, the benefits of commodity futures for trading, and price risk management. The experts from MCX explained about the importance of commodity derivatives market in India, which has been gradually increasing, with its economy becoming more aligned with the global economy. The participants were also briefed about different variants of gold?1 kg to as small as 1gm? and silver? varying from 30 kg to 1 kg?futures contracts with different denominations offered by the exchange, to cater to the needs of varied market participants.
Elaborating on the benefits and opportunities through commodity futures trading, Mr. NK Muthappa, Assistant Vice President-Business Development, MCX said, ?Commodity exchanges such as MCX that offers trading in bullion futures, actually are platforms providing a much-needed price risk management solution for all the bullion value chain participants. By design, bullion futures trading serve multi-purposes such as a tool for hedging as well as facilitating price discovery and instilling price transparency.?
?We at MCX have been, and will continue to introduce several innovations in the gold and silver derivatives market in order to fulfill the needs and requirements of all bullion stakeholders?, he added.

Kaleel Rehman, President, Gold Merchant Association, Anantapur said, ?Over past few years, gold and silver prices have exhibited quite a bit of volatility, thus subjecting bullion value chain participants to high price risks; clearly necessitating the need for a risk management platform in gold. The emergence of commodity exchanges such has MCX which is an avenue for efficient price risk management has helped the market participants tremendously.?
