New Test Could Reduce Prostate Cancer Biopsies

Men who undergo prostate cancer biopsies only to find out the concern was a false alarm may breathe a sigh of relief for a time. The new imaging procedure is being used in Washington, D.C., with a great deal of success. There doctors are pairing an MRI and an ultrasound to help them gain a more accurate view inside the body. This combination test enables doctors to better gauge if prostate cancer screening tests, such as the prostate-specific antigen test, are signaling alarm bells for all the right reasons. If they are, a biopsy may be performed. If not, a man may find himself avoiding this test in favor of more careful monitoring.
