Austin, Texas ? October 2015 - The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) has announced proposed plans to construct a new transmission line along the Brushy Creek Trail System. This line has the potential to negatively impact Austin Texas real estate and the residents who live near the Brushy Creek Trail source in the following ways:
Flooding
The Brushy Creek Area is historically prone to flooding during high rain totals in the area. Having high powered transmission lines in the area is not only unsafe, but also irresponsible from the standpoint of the residents who enjoy this area. If adjacent vegetation is removed, soil erosion can occur making it likely the creek area may be more prone to flooding. In addition, construction in the area may cause further erosion.
Harm to the environment
The creek and greenbelt area are home to many plants and wildlife, including birds, deer, fish, ducks, and salamanders. Construction and maintenance of the lines may harm plants and animals or alter their habitats so they can no longer live and thrive in the area.
Increased traffic from heavy vehicles
The road is very narrow and traffic would increase as the line is constructed and maintained. Some of this traffic would consist of large construction vehicles, which would also cause increased noise and road wear.
Decreased appearance and enjoyment of trail areas
The line would go through a major residential and recreational area, negatively impacting the community?s appearance and raising environmental concerns. The Brushy Creek Trail and its surrounding area would lose some of its natural beauty and become less of a recreational destination and focal point.
Airport-related safety issues
An airport is located off of Parmer Lane and a transmission line could pose a potential hazard to planes during takeoff and landing.
Reduced Property Values
Residents who benefit from the Brushy Creek Regional Trail not only enjoy the beauty this area provides, but also the enhanced property values that come with it. With over 7 neighborhoods having direct access to this trails system, runners, bikers and hikers are constantly seen on the trail. With the addition of a transmission line in the area, the natural appeal of the trail system will reduce, along with adjacent home values.
Residents who would like to share their views about this project are encouraged to submit a questionnaire or call an LCRA Transmission Services Corporation representative at 800-776-5272, ext. 7051.
