Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm that has spent many years fighting to ensure that the heroes and survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks are never forgotten, applauds three new lawmakers who have become co-sponsors of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act. The NY Daily News reports that U.S. Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Representatives Mark Amodei of Nevada and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida recently joined as the bills co-sponsors. The legislators ignored the recent legislation put forth by fellow Republican (U.S. Representative Bob Goodlatte) and signed onto the original bill that already has a super majority of bipartisan co-sponsors in the House and Senate. Senator Goodlatte's last minute legislation has come under steep criticism because it pushes for fewer benefits. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/gop-congress-members-back-zadroga-act-renewal-article-1.2422644
When the Zadroga Act was signed into law, it created the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program, which provides medical treatment and monitoring, and the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF), which provides compensation. On September 30, 2015, Congress allowed the WTC Health Program to expire. The program, which provides treatment to 33,000 individuals and monitors more than 70,000 more, is relying on cash reserves until next year when benefits end entirely. The Zadroga reauthorization bill seeks to extend the WTC Health Program and the VCF permanently. The NY Daily News reports that Goodlatte's legislation pushes for fewer benefits, offers reduced compensation to 9/11 victims, and only supports benefits for five years. John Feal, a 9/11 responder and advocate, called Goodlatte a negative expletive at a recent rally, according to The NY Daily News. Feal says others support his sentiments. ??I've had dozens and dozens of phone calls and emails saying 'you said what I was thinking,'" he told The NY Daily News. In fact, U.S. Representative Peter King, a bill sponsor, is also opposed to Goodlatte's bill. ??I strongly as I possibly can disagree [with his bill]," he said, according to The NY Daily News.
The firm comments that support for the Zadroga reauthorization bill is crucial. ??As time goes on, more and more responders are developing 9/11-related conditions and sick responders are getting worse," said Matthew J. McCauley, Senior Litigation Counsel at Parker Waichman. ??Congress should not delay any longer, these 9/11 heroes deserve permanent benefits and they deserve them now."
[The Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act](http://www.renew911health.org/911-advocates-respond-to-virginia-congressmans-shameful-attempt-to-shortchange-911-heroes/) released a statement in response to Goodlatte's bill, stating ??Make no mistake, the unfortunate result of this legislation would be accepting a huge cut to aid for sick and dying heroes that is shameful, even by Washington standards. Perhaps even more amazing, Congressman Goodlatte has long refused to hold a hearing on the issue??yet his bill somehow divines exactly how much aid disabled 9/11 responders need to care for themselves and their families."
Parker Waichman actively worked toward the 2010 passage of the Zadroga Act, including taking part in lobbying efforts and trips to the nation's capital, often along with the firm's clients??other responders and survivors. The firm continues its lobbying efforts and is part of a growing delegation that has rallied in Manhattan and lobbied in Washington D.C.
The firm continues to support the Zadroga Act and remain dedicated to fighting for the rights of responders and survivors. In fact, Parker Waichman was recently involved in the ??Take Action" tool that allows responders, survivors, and advocates the ability to review their Congresspersons' activities concerning the upcoming expiration of the James Zadroga Act. Parker Waichman assisted with the research on, and creation of, the Tool, which may be accessed at the Renew 911 Health Organization's website.
Parker Waichman vows to continue its efforts to safeguard 9/11 heroes and survivors and ensure they all receive the Zadroga Act compensation they deserve.
