Davao City, Philippines --Davao Region's pollution index is now rated as 'good'. This after the haze caused by the forest fire in Indonesia started clearing up after a month of affecting the area.

During a press conference held at SM City Davao on October 25, Jeperneo Ylagan, air quality management technologist of Environment and Management Bureau €“ 11 explained that the air pollution index in Davao Region is now down to 40 micrograms per cubic meter, from 70 micrograms recorded on October 17.

The forest fire is said to originate from an uncontrolled forest fire in Sumatra, Indonesia. The Habagat (southwesterly winds) further intensified the haze when it sucked in the winds during the recent Typhoon Lando. The typhoon has caused over a billion pesos worth of damage to agricultural and commercial properties in Luzon.

General Santos City has been suffering from the same haze since the forest fires started early this month. It can be recalled that the same incidence of haze in the city occurred five years ago, also caused by forest fires in Indonesia.

Ylagan further explained that the 'good' air index is unlikely to result to major health concerns. However, people suffering from respiratory illnesses like asthma are still advised to stay indoors or wear masks when outdoors. The haze is said to contain hazardous chemical compounds nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide which may cause serious illness like respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

While the pollution index is looking favorable, the haze will not completely disappear from the atmosphere unless the forest fires in Indonesia are controlled or totally put out. The forest fires are allegedly a result of slash and burn farming.

Meanwhile, Davao residents take to highland attractions like Eden Nature Park and [Malagos Garden Resort](http://www.philippinetraveler.com/malagos-garden-resort-davao-city/) to avoid the polluted air while school children are on semestral break.
