According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, Indian Generic Drug Market Outlook 2020, When it comes to patent expiration, drug manufacturers face far reaching consequences in terms of revenue loss. The figures were sobering for pharma giants like Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb etc. when they lost patent protection during 2011-2012 for their blockbuster drugs such as Lipitor, Plavix and Viagra among others. There are two interesting things that come with patent cliff. Firstly, there is a greater focus on research and development as drug makers invest on new technologies. Secondly, it opens doors for generic companies to replace the innovator drug with their counterpart drugs that are priced 80% less than the originals. When patents expire, generic drug companies are free to create their own replicas.

Ongoing Patent cliff would be a big financial boost for the generic industry. India exports 40-45% of the generic drugs to several markets including US, Europe and Africa. Thus, it is benefitting several Indian firms. The share of Indian companies is growing rapidly in the international generics market with increasing number of Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) filings. According to the laws, first to file ANDA with a Para-IV certification allows the company to sell generic version for branded drugs for 180 days. Over the years Ranbaxy, Dr Reddy's and Lupin have been the major applicants for Para-IVs. For instance, Dr Reddy's Laboratories got the generic exclusivity for Olanzapine Tablets, the generic version of Eli Lilly's Zyprexa which expire in September, 2011. Similarly Ranbaxy is developing Pfizers drug Caduet.

The report is spread in over 80 pages and provides an in-depth research and rational analysis of the current status and future prospect of the Indian Generic Drug Market. The report provides a clear picture of the several factors driving the industry growth, and challenges faced by the industry. In addition to this, the study includes several government initiatives to promote unbranded generics. The report further highlights consolidations, regulatory landscape and different players influencing the domestic market. With special emphasis on various government policies, opportunities and recommendations sections, investors will be familiar with the hidden potential of the domestic market.
